HOMILY FOR TUESDAY: THE SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME (19/1/2021)

HEBREWS 6:10-20; PSALM 112; MARK 2:23-28

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” This statement was in response to the accusation that Jesus disciples were breaking the law regarding resting on the Sabbath when they walked by some fields and plucked heads of grain. Jesus response to the accusing Pharisees contains two important teachings: First, the Sabbath was intended to help people, not burden them. Second, Jesus is Lord even of the Sabbath. That is, Jesus is in charge of the Sabbath. He knows how the law is to be enforced. As Christians, we are not judged by whether or not we keep the Sabbath day (Col. 2:16). Sunday observance is important but there is more to Christianity than Sunday observance. Catechism makes us to understand that works of necessity and mercy are legal on a Sabbath day. It is better to save a life at the detriment of Sunday worship than to lose that life. Precisely because of this, the first reading says “God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name by having served and continuing to serve the holy ones.” Beloved, one’s life is far more important than rituals.

Let us pray

Great is the wisdom of the Lord! God Almighty, your Wisdom includes an understanding of what is fair, what is logical, what is true, what is right and what is lasting. It mirrors your pure intellect! I entreat you to grant me such wisdom, that my labours and worship may reflect your insight. Your Wisdom expands in your creations, displaying complexity and multiplicity. Your Wisdom is an eternity ahead of man. May your wisdom flourish forever!
