HOMILY FOR THE MEMORIAL OF ST MARTHA (29/7/2020)

1John 4:7-16; Psalm 33; John 11:19-27

The basic theme in our first reading is love. Martha whose memorial we celebrates today was moved by love at the death of his brother Lazarus. In love she waited in fervent hope and trust that Christ will come and wipe away every tear from their eyes. In love, we must continue to pray in faith and trust for our departed brethren. Even though we cannot restore them back to life we can help them gain eternal life. In response to that love, the gospel reading presents us with the arrival of Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus. The scene has so many lessons for us. One of them is Martha’s faith in Jesus as the resurrection and the life. Precisely because of this, we also profess believe in the resurrection. That is, Jesus is the Lord of our physical and spiritual life. But the greatest miracle of Jesus was not in restoring Lazarus to physical life. No, the greatest miracle lies in Jesus’ power to give endless spiritual life to those who believe in him. Beloved in Christ, Martha’s faith was rewarded; those who truly have faith and profess their faith with confidence shall be rewarded in this life and in the life to come.

THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit; Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into Hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; The Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen
