Isaiah 10:5-7, 13-16; Psalm 94; Matthew 11:25-27
In the first reading, God permitted the King of Assyria to be used as the rod of his anger over Judah for the sins they committed. After this, he boasted of his power for the victory he gained. Nothing happens outside the plan of God. What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? I Cor1:31 says “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” Precisely because of this, in the Gospel, Jesus calls us to be humble and possess a childlike in trust God. St Bonaventure, whose memorial we celebrate today wrote in his book The Journey of the Mind to God that as “pride is the beginning of all sin, so humility is the foundation of all virtue. Learn to be really humble and not, as the hypocrite, humble merely in appearance.”
